I cold-called Grain Place when Quinn was 6 months old. He was trying to take a nap and screaming BLOODY murder in his crib. I could hear him from up in the attic. (The attic was our second floor, and our office.)
I remember the exact moment.
Dave (answering the phone): "This is Dave Vetter."
Me: "Dave, we want to pack your organic popcorn in a microwave bag without the susceptor and the paper is compostable, do you think you can do this? "
Dave: "Well, sure. I don't see why we couldn't do it."
The rest is history.
A few years later, we moved to Colorado, so C.V., our Ops lead at the time, Coulter, my husband, and I piled into our car to drive to Nebraska and visit the farm. We walked in, Don, Dave's dad, was sitting in his chair. At 90 yrs old, his passion for farming was still evidently clear. You could tell by the twinkle in his eye, and the way he sat proudly in his office chair. I will never forget that moment. Don, in the early 70's, took a stance on organic farming, in the middle of the country where organic farming was considered "odd". He knew it was the right thing to do, and did it. A few decades later, his son Dave, runs and operates this little sanctuary, that I have had the deepest honor in visiting with my three little boys. Showing them the land in which their food is grown on, meeting the most dedicated and hard working folks I know, who grow their food.
Current Mood. Grain Place Foods.
Touring the silos at Grain Place with David Vetter.
We walked out into the warehouse, took the stairs up to the conference room to eat a home made lunch in the conference room just outside Dave's office. A lunch made with love, and the best darn baked beans I ever did have.
We toured the farm, saw the pigs, he gave us a tutorial on regenerative farming, and we climbed up to his new silo's. It was magic. We were at the source that feeds ALL. The land, the crops, the people.
This visit ultimately defined our, Quinn's, path. Knowing where your food comes from, how it is grown, who is growing it, does matter. Farm-to-Bag Transparency was born out of the love Don and Dave Vetter have for their land. Be Better. Do Better, stems from the knowing that you can always be, and do better. Just visit any family farm, that is trying to do good for future generations to come. It smacks you in the face. David, Kristy, Coulter, and CV with a fresh box of Quinn microwave popcorn.
Dreaming of a Vetter World is just that. It's a story about the Vetter's, Dreaming of a Better World. And I am so grateful and honored to be a part of their story, and for Grain Place to be a part of ours. Dave, thank you for believing in Quinn the moment you answered my phone call. If you have a few minutes, please add Dreaming of a Vetter World to your must watch list! It's an inspiring story not only about regenerative agriculture, but also about not be afraid to do things a little differently.
